Nissa Nightfire in the Second Life World

Evolution of a Blog~

I started blogging in November 2007, just a mere few days after I rezzed in Second Life. If you are interested in a trip down memory lane… you can start here. If nothing else, it might serve as a reminder that we all started somewhere, and there was a learning curve. 😉 My blog has definitely changed bit by bit over time — I learned more, I observed more, and I became a little more technologically proficient. Perhaps most importantly, I became part of a community that can be extraordinarily helpful, with someone always willing to answer questions, provide tutorials, and even give away their best blogging secrets. The generosity of the fashion blogging community is often overwhelming. I hope I’ve been able to put some of that wealth to good use.

As I approach the beginning of my fourth year as a Second Life blogger, I would like to make an even bigger evolutionary step. I’m moving my blog over to a new domain of my own, changing the name, and expanding its coverage somewhat. Nissa and crew will be now be blogging over at Wondering The Grid: Designing a Second Life with Passion and Style. Fashion and avatar style will always be a huge part of my blogging, but I also want to take a look at how we create and style our environments, and our lives. Pretty much anything that figures into your motivation to log-in to Second Life is fair game.

So while I’m moving, please forgive the dust in the corners, and the rough edges. I’ll be posting on both blogs until I can get all my ducks, and feeds, in a row 🙂

365 Days: 1/365

Day 1 of 365 : Peter and Nissa -- Ballooning

Today is the first day of my 3rd year in Second Life! To celebrate, I decided to join 365 Days in Second Life (explained here) – one self portrait a day for an entire year! I know — a few of you are a little skeptical, and I don’t blame you. (/me glances over at her blogging history, takes a deep breath, and forges ahead anyway) I’m excited about this new challenge — an opportunity to take a minute each day to notice what’s going on around me, to record a memory… to make a memory.

Every photo won’t necessarily show up on my blog. To catch them all, you’ll need to check out my Flickr photostream — so add me to your contact list! Part of my deal with myself is that I’m not going to worry about providing credits for every photo involved in the project. But — if you see something you can’t place, and you have a strong need to know… clothing, environment, location, etc — send me a note or comment and I’ll see if I can remember or track it down for you 🙂

By the way — if you haven’t tried hot-air ballooning in SL, you should give it a try! It was tremendous fun (and a terrific date activity). Peter piloted the balloon, but reports that it practically flew itself. I don’t know if that is entirely true — but we navigated over at least 50 sims and never crashed!

Nissa’s 2nd Rez Day~

Rez Day Poppins Jump - 2009

As I write this rez day post, its fast approaching midnight in my part of the world. I had a unique gift of time to myself today, and started the day thinking of the reflections I might write on this occasion. And, somehow, the day is almost over, and the blog post just started. Many of my thoughts today are big topics themselves, and I will save most of them for another time. But, I couldn’t let the day go by without a few words and pictures.

The picture above is the traditional Poppins jump — my first. If you aren’t familiar with this fun tradition, get all the info here! Yup — I kept my boots on — I was landing on rocky ground! Today — this jump was symbolic of a lot of things. Only a couple of weeks ago, the sim I lived and worked on was sold suddenly. I grieved the loss of the place I had called home for the better part of the last year. But, as they say, the only constant is change — and it was time to move on. Today, I jumped off a platform high above my own little slice of the mainland — and jumped into a new chapter of my SLife!  In the coming year, I hope to share a lot of my plans and progress with what I hope to make out of this place~

Nissa's Rez Day 2009

As I anticipate what lies ahead, I would be remiss if I didn’t reflect just a moment on the year that has passed, and that has brought me this far. I spent a large part of my first year alone — enjoying Second Life, learning, shopping — but most of my time was rather solitary. My only TWO friends, Ritina and Salvia, will attest to my hermit-ness 🙂 My second year here has been completely different … and lovely… and I feel incredibly enriched by it.  While there are many wonderful things to celebrate about the last year, there is none more important to me than than the amazing man in my life, Peter Stindberg. Peter has been a part of my life for almost the entire last year, and my experience here has been fundamentally changed because of that.  He encourages me, supports me, comforts me, challenges me… and loves me in the very best sense of the word.  We all need more of that in our lives, and I’m grateful to have found it here.  Thank you, Peter — for being the tremendous man that you are, and for sharing a part of that with me~

So — Happy Rez Day to me! And full speed ahead into Year 3~

A Voice

I thought long and hard about how I might respond to the call for a boycott. I thought so long and hard about it, and then got distracted by some unrelated stupidity, that I didn’t get this posted yesterday as planned! I don’t plan to go through all the various points and counter-points that have been flying fast and furious in recent days. I’ve heard substantive things on both sides that I can understand.

What I will say is that I’ve been incredibly disappointed every time I’ve heard a person suggest that members of this community who do not completely agree with them should just be quiet and get or stay out of the way. My response is to share my own voice — because I can, and because I should, without fear of being put on someone’s “list”. We should all be able to do at least that much in this community.

The voice I choose today, and most every day I blog, is one of celebration of some of the amazing designers whose talent and work I enjoy daily. They make my life in SL rich, interesting, and diverse. I admire their art, their humor, and their passion for what they do. It’s my honor to buy their work, and share it on my blog.

New Releases from Magpie * Designs by Nissa Nightfire

Magpie is pleased to release a brand new collection, in stores now. The collection includes coordinating earrings, bracelets, and pendants in four different goth motifs, inset with colored gemstones. Each piece is sold separately. Bracelets and pendants are already fitted for alternate attachment points, and the bracelets include a coordinating set of plain silver bracelets to help complete your look. For the first time, in this collection, I have used an oval-shaped bracelet — for a more natural, cuff-like fit around your wrist. All pieces are modifiable for fine-tuning a custom fit.

Click the links below, or visit Magpie in-world to see the other motifs in this collection!

In The Corn Field

Ever since I heard the legend… I’ve wanted to visit the corn field. Its very existence is evidence of what makes a virtual world so very real … a history… a sense of place… existing long before I was rezzed, but something to share with someone I’ve only recently met. Today, I told my new friend Eb, an SL-old-timer, that I had gone to the corn field. “What? you mean ‘the’ corn field?” Indeed. As odd as it might seem, this is the stuff that binds us together in a unique community.

I’ve been a very delinquent fashion blogger of late … so on the theory that I can’t wait forever for the perfect moment, I decided to do an impromptu little shoot with what I already had on, enjoying a beautiful fall day, celebrating one of SL’s favorite holidays, in one of SL’s mythical places.

Stokame Artist Colony : Samhain Hunt

Stokame Artist Colony is hosting its first Samhain hunt, from now thru October 31st. The Stokame Artist Colony is a small community of both established and newer content creators living and working on the beautiful Osa Menor sim. If you haven’t visited this sim before, now is a great time! The Mercado has been decorated for the season, you can pick up many Halloween-themed items in the SAC Pumpkin Patch, and hunt for free prizes from SAC merchants.

The Samhain Hunt is a small, easy, and fun hunt … there are 21 different prizes available, which will be randomly rezzed in the form of Jack-O-Lanterns (like the ones in the poster above) in the shops and open areas of the Mercado. Find and click a Jack-O-Lantern, and the prize is yours!

You don’t need to leave the Mercado to find all the prizes — but while you’re here, be sure to check out Diesel Work’s beautiful main store, and take a look at some of the residential areas as well. There are still residential and commercial vacancies on Osa Menor — at some of the most economical prices around!

Jewelry Fair 2009 — Last Weekend!

Like many of you this weekend, I’ll be waiting anxiously to get into the Skin/Shape Fair. But while you wait for the lag to die down a bit — be sure to take an opportunity to visit the Jewelry Fair one last time. This is its final weekend, and there are tons of great things to see there. This was Magpie’s first jewelry show, and I have had such tremendous fun! The Jewelers of SL have been a terrific bunch — I’ve enjoyed the camaraderie, and learned a heck of a lot. It always surprises me a bit, tho’ it shouldn’t, that content creators are so generous with their time and expertise.

The choker and earring set I’m wearing above is one of my favorite sets. Altho’ I have a tendency to use brighter colors in a lot of my work, this blue and black combination really spoke to me. You can see this, along with the rest of my newest releases, at the Jewelry Fair! Magpie is at Autumn, Booth 4.
